The first objective of Shades 4 AIDS is to increase the awareness amongst
Australian schools of the stigma, discrimination and poverty inflicted on
children with HIV.
The second objective is to raise funds to run a HIV program in Cambodia to
prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child, as well as to provide
care and support for those children already affected by HIV/AIDS.
To save a child from contracting HIV cost about $250. This money is used to
test pregnant women for HIV, then for those infected to provide medicine to
prevent HIV transmission mother to child followed up with education and
support for alternatives to breast feeding.
We hope that when a school registers, the school will pledge funds to save one
or more children from contracting HIV. We are encouraging schools to go
beyond raising funds just on Shades 4 AIDS Day.
Schools that raise the most funds in their region will be eligible to visit our
centre in Battambang, Cambodia to see first hand the work that we are doing. It
also gives the school the opportunity to do some voluntary work in Cambodia.
