The idea for Shades 4 AIDS started with Joy Smithers and others at West Mead Hospital, Sydney in 2005. Joy has been working as a voluntary fundraiser for Hope for Cambodian Children Foundation since 2006. Joy (as a board member) put forward the idea for Shades 4 AIDS for schools when the Foundation started looking for funds to support a new project for the prevention of transmission of HIV from mother to child in Cambodia. The foundation currently has projects on AIDS education in rural areas and cares for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Fundraisers in Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and NSW started approaching schools early in 2009. The response from these schools has been overwhelming.

The first school to register for Shades 4 AIDS was Melbourne Grammar School. The first region of state schools to register was the Northern region in Victoria.
