The facts
- There are over 38 million people living with HIV and AIDS worldwide, half are women.
- Over 2.1 million children are living with HIV and AIDS, 90% of them resulting from mother-to-child transmission.
- In 2007, about 420,000 children were infected with HIV.
- Less than 10% of HIV children are receiving drug treatment.
- Only 9% of HIV pregnant women received treatment to prevent transmission to child.
- Since AIDS was first identified over 20 years ago, more than 20 million people have died.
- There are more than 15 million children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
- In some of the worst affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa rates of HIV infection are as high as one in three.
- Cambodia has the highest rate of HIV in Asia.
